Hitron launches 10G Fiber ONT/ONU series

Aug. 25, 2020
Hitron's Nova 10G PON ONT/ONUs enable ISPs to cost-effectively roll out 10G broadband for premium residential and business subscribers.

North American DOCSIS customer premise equipment (CPE) manufacturer Hitron Technologies this week announced the launch of its Nova family of 10G fiber devices.

The company says its new 10G PON ONT/ONU series can deliver up to 10 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream speeds for internet service providers (ISPs), providing the ultra-high bandwidth needed for IPTV, HD and ultra-HD video on demand services, as well as cloud gaming, multi-Gigabit data, telecommuting, interactive and voice over IP applications, and more.

Of the new 10G PON ONT/ONUs, Hitron says:

The 10 Gigabit PON fiber interface is capable of supporting both EPON, XG-PON and XGS-PON. 10G PON gives service providers a compelling price/performance ratio. Because there’s no need to modify the Optical Distribution Network, 10G PON is a cost-effective upgrade. At the same time, it offers the ultra-high symmetrical bandwidth that allows providers to expand into more application scenarios and higher ARPU services.

In addition, Hitron’s Nova ONUs support DOCSIS DPoE 2.0 (DOCIS Provisioning over EPON), which enables the ONU to look like a CMTS to a DOCSIS system, as explained by the company. As a result, cable operators can migrate to fiber without the high cost of overhauling their existing DOCSIS provisioning, billing and management systems.

Per the manufacturer, a summary of key product details for the Nova ONT/ONUs includes the following:

• Supports IEEE 802.3av 10G-EPON, ITU-T G.987.2 XG-PON and ITU-T G.9807.1 XGS-PON
• Speeds up to 10 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream
• 10G and 1G LAN
• DOCSIS DPoE 2.0 compliant
• Remotely manageable via 802.3ah OAM
• Built-in fiber tray (select models)
• Optional voice and battery backup (select models)

Greg Fisher, president at Hitron Technologies Americas, commented, “10G PON delivers the multi-Gigabit bandwidth and quality that service providers need to maximize their revenue opportunities in residential and business markets. We’re excited to add the Nova family of 10G PON ONT/ONUs to our portfolio of DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 products, as it gives providers choices on how to deliver multi-Gigabit services and upgrade their networks to meet the demand for high-capacity Internet.”
