Canadian Pay TV to Peak this Year

According to IHS, Canada's pay TV market (including cable, telco and satellite) will reach the saturation point this year. The research house expects penetration of pay TV subscriptions among Canadian TV households to reach an all-time high of 92% in 2012. Subscription penetration is expected to decline slightly during the following years, due to economic issues and rising competition from over-the-top (OTT) services. By 2016, IHS expects Canadian pay TV subscriptions to decline slightly to 89.9% of TV households.

The Canadian peak in pay TV subscriptions comes three years after the same event occurred in the United States. IHS believes Canada reached the peak later because of delayed economic effects and severe data caps implemented by cable operators in the country.
