Chilean cable operator VTR, a subsidiary of Liberty Global (NASDAQ:LBTYA), says it has more than doubled the number of customers using its video on demand (VOD) service since implementing a new cloud-based user interface (UI) from ActiveVideo. The new UI features upgraded graphics, TV previews, and the ability to browse and search by genre, actor or title.

Since the upgraded service was implemented in October, VTR says the number of views of its on-demand service increased by 138% year-on year, alongside 11% growth in the number of customers that access it, 44% in number of views and 83% in views per subscriber.

The new services are transmitted from a cloud-based browser to the set-top boxes of more than 95% of VTR's customers with digital TV. VTR partnered with ActiveVideo to virtualize functionalities of cloud-based set-top boxes via the vendor's CloudTV GuideCast.

"The ability to offer next-generation experiences to all our customers is leading to a greater interest in our on-demand content library," said Edwin Elberg, VTR's director of product development. He added that "moving the platform to the cloud has allowed us to provide an advanced and uniform user experience across our digital set-top boxes, thus delivering our customers the best TV experience yet."
