A new international trade association called the WhiteSpace Alliance has been formed with the goal of enabling cost-effective broadband solutions and supporting products and services that use white space spectrum. The group has initially adopted a solution based on IEEE 802.22 technology, which utilizes the "white spaces" between broadcast TV channels to provide broadband wireless access over a large area up to 100 km from the transmitter. The technology is designed to deliver up to 29 Mbps per TV channel. The Alliance is actively recruiting members among silicon providers, ISPs, database providers, broadcasters and OEMs.
