Broadpeak, a provider of content delivery network (CDN) and video streaming platforms for content providers and pay-TV operators globally, announced on June 10 that Megacable, one of the largest triple-play providers in Mexico, has optimized the delivery of its Xview+ streaming service via Broadpeak's technology.

Using Broadpeak's CDN and nanoCDN multicast ABR [adaptive bit rate] technology, Megacable can deliver live, VOD, time-shift TV, catch-up TV, as well as premium TV offerings on the TV and any device, ensuring a superior quality of experience (QoE) for millions of simultaneous viewers while reducing delivery costs.

"Our Xview+ service is growing, and to guarantee an exceptional streaming experience for viewers, we needed a robust, high-performance CDN solution," said Gerardo Seifert, chief marketing officer at Megacable. "With multicast ABR, we no longer have to worry about unpredictable peaks in traffic impacting streaming quality, and we've successfully unified video delivery to any screen. Broadpeak's expertise in pioneering multicast ABR technology proved to be invaluable during this project, helping streamline our multiscreen video delivery as we continue to add more subscribers."

With an aim to simplify video streaming, Megacable notes it has transitioned from a hybrid IPTV and broadcast delivery model to a full-on OTT adaptive bitrate system. The provider's Xview+ service, with more than 250 channels delivered exclusively in streaming formats, is available on Android TV set-top boxes (STBs) that are mostly connected through Wi-Fi and a mobile device app, guaranteeing a consistent streaming experience for subscribers.

Broadpeak's nanoCDN multicast ABR platform relies on a software agent installed inside both STBs and optical network terminals that dramatically reduces delivery costs and removes unicast traffic peaks in the network. The company says its nanoCDN platform preserves a broadcast-like latency for live events and automatically retransmits lost packets to guarantee the highest possible QoE for subscribers, even when the STB is connected via Wi-Fi.

Megacable is also relying on a comprehensive analytics platform from Broadpeak to gain insight into how subscribers experience the service and how the delivery system performs. For each streaming session, Broadpeak's analytics solution oversees subscribers' QoE, providing critical information such as the bitrates streamed and the layer switches.

Megacable says it has integrated Broadpeak's CDN, nanoCDN, and analytics solutions with third-party systems from Viaccess-Orca, Dotscreen, Technicolor, and ZTE, among others.

"We are proud to partner with a major operator moving from a legacy offering to providing an easy-to-use and high-quality TV service for Mexican families at home and on the go on mobile devices with the Xview+ app," said Jacques Le Mancq, CEO at Broadpeak. "Our nanoCDN multicast ABR solution solves two critical issues — scalability and quality of experience — with a future path to CMAF and low-latency streaming for Megacable."
