Liberty Expands its Horizons

Liberty Global (NASDAQ:LBTYA, LBTYB and LBTYK) has launched Horizon TV (first announced at last year's IBC) with UPC Netherlands, and it's planned to be rolled out in Switzerland, Germany and Ireland over the next three to six months.

Horizon TV is a new family of media products designed to allow customers to view and share content across the TV, computer, tablet and smartphone. The UI navigates and recommends digital content from cable, on demand libraries, personal devices, selected apps and online sources. The Horizon TV gateway also serves as a full triple-play box delivering video, Internet and voice, as well as a wireless network for the home.

Samsung built the multimedia gateway, Intel supplied the Atom CE Media Processor, and NDS supplied the middleware and user interface. Nagravision supplied the Media Access encryption system. Horizon supports MoCA, delivered by Entropic, and WiFi, delivered by Celeno Communications, and is part of the DLNA ecosystem. The widget framework was developed by Metrological, and the recommendation engine is powered by ThinkAnalytics. Seachange provided the VOD back office.

Multiscreen capabilities run on IOKO's enterprise service platform. Intellicore developed the second screen app. A joint development by KIT Digital and thePlatform created an enterprise service platform and content management system. The browser and app were designed and developed by Empathy Labs. Metrological developed the connected application framework. Twonky provided the application to enable devices to communicate via DLNA to the gateway.
