Portuguese cable operator NOS Comunicações SA has launched a 4K/UltraHD video service and called in a slew of vendors to contribute to it.

The RDK 2.1 hybrid IP video service uses Espial's (TSX:ESP) G4 STB Client, ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS) ZD4500 set-tops, Broadcom BCM7251S chipsets, NAGRA anyCAST CONNECT content protection, and Nuance Dragon TV Voice Recognition. Systems integration was provided by the Espial Elite professional services team.

The personalized 4K video service integrates live, on-demand, OTT, catch-up, and cloud DVR content, along with voice control and a 1080 user interface running on the RDK stack. Espial says the RDK 2.1 implementation is Europe's first.

NOS has more than 4 million mobile phone, 1.5 million video, 1.6 million fixed telephone and 1.1 million fixed broadband Internet customers.
