Horizon Telcom (www.horizontel.com), a telecommunications provider serving rural southern Ohio for the past 115 years, is using RGB Networks' (www.rgbnetworks.com) Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG) to increase the number of HDTV channels that it offers its IPTV subscribers. Horizon has deployed the VMG in its Chillicothe, OH, headquarters, which serves all of its service areas, including 25,000 subscribers in 13 Southern Ohio counties.

The fact that the majority of the new HD programming available to Horizon is delivered in MPEG-2 caused an issue for the operator, whose IPTV service is based on MPEG-4/H.264. The situation created the need for a transcoding solution to convert the incoming MPEG-2 streams to MPEG-4/H.264.
