580,000 Add Broadband in Q3

According to the Leichtman Research Group, the 17 largest cable and telephone providers in the United States - representing about 93% of the market - acquired about 580,000 net additional high-speed Internet subscribers in the third quarter of 2012. The top broadband providers now account for more than 80.7 million subscribers, with cable companies having 46.2 million broadband subscribers and telcos having 34.5 million.

Overall, broadband additions in 3Q 2012 amounted to 92% of those in 3Q 2011. The top cable companies added about 575,000 subscribers, representing 110% as many additions as in 3Q 2011. Comcast added 287,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter - nearly 50% of the total for the top providers. The top telcos added about 5,000 subscribers compared to a gain of about 108,000 in 3Q 2011. AT&T and Verizon added 749,000 fiber subscribers (via U-verse and FiOS) in the quarter, while having a net loss of 799,000 DSL subscribers.
