Alaskan cable operator General Communication Inc. (GCI) has launched 4G service in the Anchorage area. GCI's 4G wireless service download speeds are rated up to 21 Mbps, and the company plans to launch 4G service in several Alaska locations by the end of 2011, as well as upgrading many other communities to 3G speeds.

GCI is the largest telecommunications company in Alaska. Its cable plant -- which provides voice, video, and broadband data services -- passes 90% of Alaska households.
