Power availability and reliability will share the spotlight with energy management issues when the SCTE convenes its Fall 2011 Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI) Forum and a meeting of the Sustainability Management Subcommittee (SMS) this week in Arlington, TX.

During the day-long Sept. 14 forum at Cowboys Stadium, cable operators and vendors will offer case studies and strategies intended to help the industry to enhance technology density while reducing energy consumption; to increase utilization of alternative energy sources; and to ensure the availability of critical services in the event of interruption of power from the grid.

Among the presentations will be a review by SCTE, Alpha Technologies and CommScope about the solar/fuel cell hybrid power system at SCTE headquarters, as well as case studies on:

  • Architecting Data Center Resiliency and Energy Efficiency (Doug Alger, Cisco)

  • Generator Operations and Maintenance for Critical Facilities (Simpson Cumba, Comcast)

  • An update on Cox Conserves, the company's national sustainability program (Steven Bradley)
