Multiscreen video and other advanced services require huge amounts of content to be transmitted upstream and down. Cable operators won’t be able to play in this realm without upgrading their networks – in some cases quite extensively. The challenge in some cases will be to upgrade overall capacity. In others it will be to extend the upstream path. In some, it will be both. The good news is that making these changes doesn’t necessarily involve ripping and replacing. For instance, there now are ways to upgrade from 550 MHz to 1 GHz without respacing amplifiers. Likewise, some amplifiers lend themselves to changes in the mix of downstream and upstream capacity. The bottom line is that these changes must be made – and that a careful approach can minimize the disruption they cause. This video is sponsored by Motorola.
