Netflix LogoAccording to this blog post, Netflix is aiming to slip under the usage caps imposed by Canadian ISPs. The company said it's reduced the data consumption of 30 hours of streaming by two-thirds, from a typical 30 GB to 9 GB. Picture quality does take a hit, the blog said, but subs can change back to the higher settings themselves if they wish.

Blog author Neil Hunt, Netflix chief product officer, wrote, "We made these changes because many Canadian Internet service providers unfortunately enforce monthly caps on the total amount of data consumed."
