Officials in Winston-Salem, NC, ratified an agreement with AT&T (NYSE:T) to bring gigabit Internet access to city residents and businesses via AT&T's U-verse with GigaPower over a fiber network.

The agreement stemmed from a North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) initiative, consisting of six cities, four universities, and local businesses working to encourage development of high-speed broadband networks in the state.

Similar AT&T GigaPower plans related to the NCNGN initiative are pending ratification in five other North Carolina areas: Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh.
