Canadian service provider TELUS (TSX:T) is investing $1 billion to connect the majority of homes and businesses in the city of Vancouver, BC, to the company's fiber-optic network over the next five years. The buildout, part of TELUS' plan to invest $4 billion in British Columbia through 2018, is expected to add more than 400,000 homes, businesses, hospitals, community centers and municipal offices to its fiber network.

The company plans to launch Internet speeds of 150 Mbps when the first Vancouver neighborhoods are connected early next year, then higher speeds as demand warrants. TELUS' fiber network infrastructure will also be the backbone of its wireless network.
