UTOPIA Fiber wraps $20M fiber broadband build in Pleasant Grove, Utah

The new project will deliver fiber-based broadband services to every residential and business location in the city.

UTOPIA Fiber has completed its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) build in Pleasant Grove, Utah. The $20 million project, which began in August 2021, is a significant milestone for the provider as it is the 16th city that now has access to some of the fastest internet speeds in the nation.

After the first homes were seamlessly connected to the lit fiber network on May 3, 2022, the project, including 10,944 residential addresses, was completed on July 12, 2023. As of the end of August 2023, UTOPIA already has a 24% subscriber take rate.

“The project’s completion is a testament to our commitment to providing the fastest internet connectivity to communities across Utah,” said Roger Timmerman, Executive Director & CEO of UTOPIA Fiber. “We are proud to have fulfilled our promise to Pleasant Grove residents, businesses, and students by bringing them ultra-high-speed and reliable broadband service.”

Since 2009, the Pleasant Grove City project—like all other UTOPIA Fiber projects—has been funded and grown solely through subscriber revenue. The completion of this project further extends UTOPIA Fiber’s reach, providing residents with access to speeds up to 10 Gbps and 100 Gbps for businesses, currently the fastest speeds offered in the United States.

UTOPIA Fiber’s Open Access model enables multiple private-sector internet service providers (ISPs) to compete, fostering a net-neutral environment that encourages free-market competition. This approach leads to enhanced broadband access for residents while promoting service quality and affordability.

Guy Fugal, Mayor of Pleasant Grove City, praised the deployment to get access to a better internet experience. “Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for—no more slow and unreliable internet service,” he said. “With UTOPIA Fiber’s completed build, our community now has access to the high-speed fiber they need with the choices they deserve to better compete in the digital economy and bridge the digital divide.”
