Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) is introducing new features to its Velocix Content Delivery Network (CDN) solution for pay TV operators. The upgraded version takes advantage of virtualization, as well as tighter integration with IP infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of cloud networking for IP video services.

The Velocix Virtual CDN decouples the software that controls and routes traffic on a network from the physical computing and storage resources. Virtualization also lets operators create a new CDN cache in case of a hardware failure. It's also designed to use automatic resource allocation to create an "elastic CDN" capable of adjusting capacity to both planned and unexpected changes in demand. After a peak, computing resources can be released for other applications.

Additional new features include a new user interface and more flexible reports, integration with the network routing control plane, Velocix Universal Network Application Programming Interface (UNAPI), and Velocix Proxy Language.
