TDS expands plans for Wisconsin fiber-optic networks

More than 10,000 addresses around the city of Eau Claire will now receive fiber internet with up to 2Gig upload and download speeds.

TDS Telecommunications LLC (Madison, WI) said plans to construct a wholly fiber-optic network in Chippewa Falls and Altoona, Wisconsin to connect more than 10,000 total area addresses to faster internet.

TDS recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the city of Eau Claire to build a fiber network in that community; the Chippewa Falls and Altoona networks expand on that MOU.

The company also announced the launch of its fiber network in Wisconsin’s Fox Cities and recently completed projects in both Wausau and Stevens Point. TDS has been doing business in the state for 53 years and serves customers in 32 states.

TDS residential customers in the new deployments can subscribe to up to 2 Gigabits upload and download speeds, and businesses can choose dedicated connections of up to 10Gig.

“I appreciate the investment TDS is making in Chippewa Falls,” said Chippewa Falls Mayor Greg Hoffman. “This project will bring residents more choice and I’m excited about this opportunity.”

TDS expects to break ground on the new networks this spring, and services will become available in phases as the build progresses. Beyond fast internet, TDS’ fiber networks will also bring residents in both communities a new choice of TV and voice service provider.

The pandemic has highlighted the need for high-quality internet and communication services,” said Andrew Petersen, SVP of Corporate Affairs at TDS. “Fiber optics deliver reliable, fast speeds consumers are looking for to attend school, work remotely, and enjoy gaming and entertainment.”

TDS fiber networks offer residential customers symmetrical internet speeds, meaning that upload and download speeds are identical. Residents can also choose service bundles including TDS TV+, the company’s full-featured TV product, and phone services. TDS offers businesses dedicated connections, TDS TV+, and managed IP—TDS’ hosted VoIP communications solution.

“In addition to enjoying faster speeds, we hope residents are excited about having a new local provider to choose from,” concluded Petersen. “We also hire and give back locally and look forward to being a community partner in the years to come.”
