TDS lauds Wisconsin city for 'patience' after 260 mi. fiber infrastructure dig

Construction of TDS Telecom’s fiber network build in Wausau, Wisconsin is now complete.

Construction of TDS Telecom’s fiber network build in Wausau, Wisconsin is now complete, reports the operator, after installation of about 260 miles of fiber infrastructure, buried to bring faster internet to thousands of local subscribers.

“Thank you to both residents and city leaders for your patience while we worked diligently to build this extensive state-of-the-art network,” commented TDS SVP of External Affairs, Drew Petersen. “This community cooperation means Wausau has gained infrastructure that’s meeting today’s demands and is ready also for the future.”

TDS said the fiber-optic infrastructure project, first announced in July of 2019, now connects more than 16,000 area addresses to high-speed internet, TV, and phone service. The fiber-optic technology delivers up to 1Gig download and upload speeds to residents and up to 10Gig dedicated connections, plus TV and phone service.

With the digging completed, TDS said it will finalize behind the scenes work to launch services to any remaining areas. Over the last two years, the Madison-based company noted it has buried more than 260 miles of fiber cable across Wausau to enable the network.

Petersen noted that Allen Wesolowski, P.E. City Engineer, deserved special recognition for, “all of his hard work which was instrumental to keeping the project moving.”

In addition to building a fiber network, TDS said it has also been growing roots in the Wausau area. The operator opened a retail location at 227040 Rib Mountain Drive in 2020, and now employs 37 people in the state's Marathon County.

“We live and work in the communities we serve, so it’s an important part of our culture to give back whether it be to Gigi’s Playhouse, the Girl Scouts, or sponsoring community events such as Concerts on the Square, the Grand Theater Broadway Series, or the Wausau Woodchucks,” concluded Petersen.
