Harmonic (NASDAQ:HLIT) has announced its NSG Exo, a cable edge device intended to enable the deployment of a distributed access architecture (DAA) utilizing coax networks. NSG Exo, a distributed CCAP system, is designed to allow service providers to move their RF delivery requirements out of the headend or hub and deeper into the network.

The standards-based system includes DOCSIS/ EuroDOCSIS/J-DOCSIS CMTS capabilities now and is slated to get universal edge QAM capabilities in the future. The 1RU unit, which uses 45 W of power, is intended for installation in MDUs, hospitality environments and college campuses.

Signals are transmitted from the headend or hub via GigE, GPON, or EPON to the NSG Exo, which then distributes them via the MDU's coax infrastructure. It's also designed to support DOCSIS 3.1.

The product is expected to be available in Q3 and will be featured at ANGA COM 2014 in Germany.
