Harmonic (NASDAQ:HLIT) has launched the latest generation of its Electra video encoder product line, the Electra X family of media processors for broadcast and multiscreen content delivery. It's intended to support graphics, branding, and playout functionalities, as well as 4K/UltraHD live encoding.

Powered by Harmonic's PURE Compression Engine, Electra X appliance-based media processors are designed to support MPEG-2, AVC and HEVC codecs, over CBR, VBR and ABR encoding schemes to multiple screens, including 4K TVs.

The 1RU Electra X2 media processor integrates real-time SD and HD encoding, graphics, branding and playout functionality. It's designed to control multiple encoding and playout operations from one interface and a pay-as-you-grow approach to scalability. It's managed via Harmonic's NMX Digital Service Manager, a video network management solution that encompasses monitoring and managing compressed digital media services. When paired with other NMX-controlled systems, such as Harmonic's ProStream 9100 stream processor and ProMedia X Origin multiscreen media server, the Electra X2 media processor becomes part of a converged solution for linear broadcast and OTT video services.

The 2RU Electra X3 media processor is intended for operators and service providers that want to deliver UltraHD video. It uses the PURE compression engine to support UHD formats up to 2160p60 (HEVC Main 10 profile).
