RGB Networks TransAct Packager with Just-In-Time Packaging

Oct. 2, 2012
The new capabilities of the RGB Networks TransAct Packager are a "great win" for operators because they define Just-In-Time Packaging (JITP), one Diamonds judge said, applauding the fact that the product now can support multiple formats. It will save on the bandwidth and processing time associated with providing adaptive bitrate VOD, nDVR and TV Everywhere services, he said.
The JITP technology adds to the TransAct Packager the ability to handle on-the-fly packaging, in real-time when a subscriber requests the content. This eliminates the need for operators to prepackage all video assets in the different adaptive streaming protocols.RGB points out that as operators move toward supporting standards such as MPEG-DASH, converting a content library would be costly and time consuming, "especially when the uptake is uncertain." Likewise, Apple continues to upgrade HLS, so users may have devices running with all different versions. The JITP capabilities of the TransAct Packager allow operators to convert to MPEG-DASH only when the content is requested and to send the version of HLS that matches a customer's client software. All of these use cases amount to the judges praising the JITP technology as offering a "lasting value" to an operator's content storage and distribution platform, particularly where less popular and/or recently introduced formats or long-tail content are concerned.www.rgbnetworks.comSee them at Cable-Tec EXPO, Booth 443Return to the BTR Diamond Technology Reviews Elite.
