A weatherproof advanced Carrier Ethernet system able to deliver Carrier Ethernet services to almost any environment, Ciena’s 3931 received high marks from the judges, particularly because of its flexibility and abundance of “nice features.” Plus, it addresses limited availability of indoor rack space, a common issue at cell tower backhaul sites, added one judge.
The 3931 incorporates a complete OAM suite to support the network and service performance monitoring requirements of large-scale Ethernet deployments. It also provides QoS capabilities and synchronization features, with a weatherproof housing that enables low TCO for operators, Ciena said. And it leverages Ciena’s Service-Aware Operating System to deliver Ethernet services cost-effectively to various environments and applications, including the LTE backhaul, utilities and smart grid, and Ethernet business services.“I like that it incorporates the onboard RFC 2544 Performance Benchmark testing capabilities for end-to-end SLA verification, and the NNI and UNI port capacity,” one judge said. However, it’s unclear whether there’s room for an eight-way mux/demux splice tray for multiple customer handoffs all in one and whether there is redundant AC/DC power.http://www.ciena.comSee them at Cable-Tec EXPO, booth 1935Return to the BTR Diamond Technology Reviews Elite.
