Comcast Business (NASDAQ:CMCSA) announced two customer wins, one with Port Houston in Texas and the other with Mega Rock Radio in Pennsylvania.
Port Houston, a hub for international shipping trade in the United States, is using Comcast's fiber-based Ethernet for network access. Using the Comcast network, Port Houston now has gigabit-level capacity to provide network connectivity to eight publicly owned and operated terminals.
Established more than a century ago, the greater Port of Houston is the largest port in the state of Texas and the nation's largest port for foreign waterborne tonnage. It comprises nearly 200 private and eight public terminals. Port Houston (i.e. the Port of Houston Authority, a local government agency) owns, operates or leases the public terminals. Its primary activities are handling imports and exports of containers, general and breakbulk cargo.
Port Houston handles the largest breakbulk tonnage and special projects cargo in the country and its two container terminals, Barbours Cut and Bayport, which combined are responsible for handling nearly 70% of all container cargo through the U.S. Gulf Coast.
"On average, we run 5,000 to 7,000 trucks through two container terminals every weekday and to get them processed through the terminal as quickly as possible requires a high-speed network," said Ron Farrow, director, Information Technology - Infrastructure, Port Houston.
Initially, having its container terminals running on isolated operating systems for each terminal, Port Houston decided to revamp its network to connect all four of its locations, including an off-site data center, using a single Comcast fiber ring. Port Houston has deployed Ethernet Network Service (ENS) with 2 Gbps at two sites that provide direct connectivity back to specific locations to share inventory, container location and other information. Port Houston is also using Ethernet Dedicated Internet (EDI) to serve as one of its premium circuits for all Port Houston locations.
In western Pennsylvania, Mega Rock Radio, a family-owned and operated FM radio corporation, is using Comcast Business Internet and voice services.
Founded in 1981, Mega Rock Radio simulcasts rock-n-roll music programming mainly from the late 1960s to 2000s on WMKX-FM and WJNG-FM across 12 counties in western Pennsylvania.
"The Internet and phone are our primary forms of interacting with listeners and advertisers. Our prior service was slow to connect. We required a service provider that could solve these concerns and act as a partner to address any customer service questions in a timely manner," said Nathan Sharp, general manager at Mega Rock Radio.
Mega Rock Radio uses Comcast Business Internet at its office and tower locations in Brookville and Johnsonburg, PA, for on-air communications, interaction between the studio and broadcast towers and business management. The station also broadcasts information for the Emergency Alert System. Additionally, the office staff use Comcast Business TV and Business Voice services to keep connected with listeners, local businesses and advertisers.
"Since we have moved over to Comcast Business, our staff has been able to communicate quickly with our audience. While we may be a small company of seven people, the Comcast Business team has treated us as though we were their largest customer by going above and beyond to help us answer questions and ensure that services at our office and towers went smoothly," said Sharp.
