The Wi-Fi Alliance has upgraded its Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast to better support HD and 4K UltraHD video streaming. New Miracast features operate through existing WiFi network connections or Wi-Fi Direct to display multimedia content between devices. Miracast is intended to enable high-resolution content streaming between smartphones, tablets, cameras, TV sets, projectors, and car infotainment systems.

Intended for both home entertainment and enterprise scenarios, Miracast builds on a foundation of existing Wi-Fi Alliance technology programs including the latest generation of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ac to provide increased data rates. Devices connect to each other directly or through existing WiFi networks, and connections are secured with WPA2. Miracast supports new audio/video (A/V) formats and requires stricter latency standards, higher quality of A/V performance, and better A/V synchronization.

"Miracast enables users to seamlessly experience the content they want, where and when they want it," said Edgar Figueroa, president and CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance. "Miracast gives WiFi users freedom to display high-quality content while retaining ease of use, multi-vendor interoperability, and security that is shared by Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products."
