CloudXtream combines RGB's software-based transcoding and packaging solutions with cloud architectures to deploy network digital video recorder (nDVR) services and enable the targeted delivery of ads to multiple screens.
At the heart of CloudXtream is OpenStack, an open source cloud computing platform that IBM, HP, Oracle and more than 200 IT companies support, RGB says. CloudXtream complements OpenStack capabilities with the business logic necessary for effective video service delivery. With CloudXtream, operators can deploy an end-to-end nDVR solution in their own data center, hosted in the private or public cloud. It uses a software-defined networking (SDN) approach for service deployment rather than relying on dozens of individual devices in the headend. Services can be deployed in minutes rather than weeks, RGB adds.

In some geographies, regulatory agencies require that operators have a copy for each nDVR program a subscriber records. This number can be quite large, and a shared copy storage requirement of two or three petabytes can balloon to 20 to 30 PB or more for private copy. CloudXtream uses Just-In-Time Packaging (JITP) technology to package programs into the appropriate streaming protocol only when requested. Only a single packaged version of each program in an operator's library needs to be stored in a "mezzanine" format. This reduces storage requirements and yields capital and operational cost savings.
