With the Nimbra VA 220, Net Insight builds on the error-protected transport mechanism from the Nimbra VA 210 by adding MPEG encoding and decoding capabilities. This makes the new video appliance a cost-efficient solution for live media contribution and distribution, the company says.
Instead of leased lines or satellite contribution links, the Nimbra 220 uses the Internet or unmanaged networks for media transport. It has a built-in firewall, VPN and remote centralized management to support an entire network of Nimbra VAs deployed regardless of location. The product provides media quality assurance by monitoring streams and employing built-in network path redundancy with automatic failover functionality. The media layer includes a low latency encoder and decoder. When combined with the transport layer, this results in a fixed and predictable latency, Net Insight says.

Diamonds judges liked that this product gives operators the ability to acquire niche content over the Internet while working on more dedicated connectivity in the background. They called it an easy-to-use tool for encoding and transporting MPEG-4 signals over hybrid owned and public networks. "The VA 220's flexibility ensures the quality that we need," one said.
