Harmonic VOS provides cable operators with a common media processing platform and architecture. It operates virtually in IT data center environments, and therefore, can scale up or down to accommodate peaks in demand based on capacity and functional requirements across all video services. Since it is software operating across virtual machines, VOS saves on rack space, ports, and power and cooling.
Essentially, VOS brings together historically discreet functions from ingest to playout, graphics, branding, compression, packaging, and delivery for multiscreen applications to allow virtualized media processing from a single software platform. It includes Harmonic's PURE Compression Engine, which is designed to combine video quality and bandwidth efficiency for SD, HD, and Ultra HD formats; MPEG-2, MPEG-4/AVC, and HEVC compression over CBR, VBR, and ABR streams.
The Diamonds judges liked the fact that the product brings together many functions in an easy-to-use platform and noted that geo-redundancy is "a snap" once the functions are virtualized.
