Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) is launching DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service for residential and business customers in Sacramento, CA, and nine surrounding cities, including the McClellan Air Force Base.

In addition to Sacramento, the service will be available in:

  • Antelope
  • Carmichael
  • Citrus Heights
  • Elk Grove
  • Folsom
  • Galt
  • Rancho Cordova
  • Rio Linda
  • Roseville

"With this offering, Comcast will have the broadest deployment of gigabit Internet speeds throughout Northern California," said John Gauder, regional vice president, Comcast California. "This is yet another proof-point that our broadband and WiFi networks are powerful, flexible and built for speed. We've increased Internet speeds 17 times in the past 16 years, and we will continue to bring California customers the absolute fastest speeds possible by proactively investing in our advanced, high performance network."

The company's new 1 Gigabit Internet service will use DOCSIS 3.1 technology to deliver the speeds over the existing HFC network. Customers will need to install a new DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem.

"By providing world-class Internet speeds, Comcast is demonstrating its commitment to helping Sacramento transform into an urban technology lab that will help drive economic development," said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. "The city and the region are at a critical time in our growth and gigabit Internet speed is key for residents, telecommuters and businesses of all sizes to move the economy forward."

Residential Gigabit Internet service in California is $159.95 a month, without a contract. The company also has a limited time offer for new Internet customers, with pricing of $89.99 per month, with a one-year agreement. Pricing for current customers with a contract will vary. Pricing for Comcast Business services varies based on a business's location or number of locations to be served and the services to which the business currently subscribes.
