Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) is increasing the speeds of its Xfinity Internet speed package - Performance Internet - for existing customers in the Oregon/SW Washington region at no additional cost. The upgrade is also taking place in Washington state and Houston.
The package's downstream speed is being increased from 50 Mbps to up to 70 Mbps, effective March 1.
"These speed increases reflect our commitment to delivering the fastest Internet speeds to our customers, just as we've done almost every year for more than a decade," said Rodrigo Lopez, regional senior vice president of Comcast's Oregon/SW Washington Region. "Our goal is to ensure people have a great experience using our products and have all the speed they need to stay ahead of new online trends, connected devices and technological advancements."
To get the increased speeds, most customers will need to re-start their modems when notified by Comcast that the new speed is available. Comcast will also notify customers who may need to upgrade their modems to receive the increased speeds. Customers who lease modems from Comcast can get upgraded modems at no additional charge. Customers who own their own modems and need to upgrade their modems to receive the increased speeds will need to purchase a new modem or lease a new modem from Comcast.
The Oregon/SW Washington, Seattle and Houston markets are also slated to get DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit Internet service later this year.
