Bell (TSX:BCE) announced the first phase of the launch of Gigabit Fibe, with Internet service available to approximately 1.3 million homes in Québec and Ontario. "Gigabit" is actually a bit of a misnomer as the fiber-based service's top speed tier comes up short at 940 Mbps, though the company says the speed will be increased to 1 Gbps or faster in 2016.

Bell Fibe Internet customers can upgrade to Gigabit Fibe for $10 per month in a bundle. Available Internet speed tiers include 15, 25, 50, 150, 300 and 940 Mbps. Atlantic Canada is expected to get Gigabit Fibe speeds by the end of September, and the service's total footprint is expected to reach 2.2 million homes by the end of 2015.
